On a scorching hot day (29th of June) our Managing Director, Chris McMahon, ventured out on to the track for his next race in the Caterham Academy Championships at Snetterton Race Track. With temperatures reaching an impressive 31 degrees, it was certainly a hot day for the spectating crowd, but even more intense for Chris driving in his Caterham.
The Caterham Academy Championship is the starting point for racing with Caterham and is aimed at those with no previous experience in the motorsport world. The Academy Race Package starts at just £26,995 and this includes your car, racing driver licence, full season race entry and fully guided entry into the motorsport competition. Plus there are many more benefits to be found in full on the Caterham Academy website.
Prior to the race, Chris arrived at the track to complete his testing and get to grips with the track with the assistance of Rory Butcher… although Chris will tell you he is teaching Rory a trick or too. Two hours later and Chris had reduced his lap time and was feeling more confident with the course. The car was given its final inspection before the race.
At around 2pm the 25 drivers took to their positions on the grid, with Chris starting in 10th place. The lights turned red and the 5 second countdown commenced! Engines roared and what was shaping up to be a great start was abruptly ended. A three car collision, which Chris narrowly avoided, brought the race to a halt and after a lap with the safety car, drivers were lined up on the grid to restart the race.
The lights went red once again and this time the race would be completed. With only 20 minutes of track time, it was time for Chris to give it his very best and make up the places. This is a hard challenge in the Academy Car with its harder compound tyres, which make you work through the corners, ensuring you keep the back end in check. After gruelling in the extreme heat within the car, Chris managed to finish 7th overall. Well done!
